Swing pipe, funny pipe, 1/2″ sprinkler head tubing, and flex pipe are a few of the names for this tubing. The word I would use is fantastic. Before funny pipe came onto the market the only way to reposition sprinkler heads was a tedious exercise of pipe cutting, inserting a PVC tee or elbow, and then using cut-off nipples to get the sprinkler head just the right height and flush with the surface of the turf. With funny pipe all you need is a couple of barb adapters, the funny pipe, and some tubing cutters.
Benefits include:
- Easy installation for lower labor costs.
- Installs quickly.
- Superior flexibility allowing pipe to be routed around hardscape, terraces, and uneven terrain.
- Kink resistant.
Specifications:
- Inside diameter: 0.49″ (1.24 cm)
- Operating pressure: Up to 80 psi (5.5 bar)
- Temperature: Up to 110⁰ F (43⁰ C)
If you are a homeowner who does a lot of sprinkler repairs yourself, this is a must have addition to your sprinkler parts. In the years I have been using funny pipe I have only had it blow off a barb adapter once, and that was because I bought some after market adapters that weren’t as good as the Rain Bird spiral barb adapters. I have never had the funny pipe blow off the Rain Bird adapters. I have also heard that you can blow up a sprinkler head before the funny pipe will blow off an adapter. I don’t know if this is urban myth, but I’m inclined to believe it. So my advice is to buy Rain Bird funny pipe and absolutely buy the Rain Bird adapters to go with it.
Pros – Ease of use and installation. Great time saver.
Cons – None that I’ve come across yet.
Below is an example of how funny pipe can be used in a head installation.
